Ms. Ramkumar

About Me
I completed the International Baccalaureate course from Lauriston Girls School in 2003. Science (especially Biology and Chemistry) and Economics were my favourite subjects. I passed out with a very high ENTER score. I joined a double degree which encompassed Biomedical Sciences and Economics in Monash University and completed the same in 2008.

After completing my double degree, I decided to join the work force and over the last two years have been working in private and public organisations. I must admit that though I gained experience working for large organisations, I did not really enjoy the type / nature of work. This really changed my mind, making me realise my strengths and weaknesses, further reinforcing my interest and commitment to the field of education. I am determined to pursue teaching as my career path and hence am working on qualifying myself in this field.

I have a passion for teaching and enjoy interacting with students on both an academic and personal level, building a good rapport with them, helping them with their difficulties in studies, bringing out the best in their educational experience, imparting the knowledge I have acquired at school and university to them and nurturing their brains to help them shape their future and society as a whole. I have been regularly tutoring VCE and IB chemistry, biology and economics to high school students and first and second year microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics-based subjects to university students (in both groups and individually) since April 2005.

I have assisted in the preparation of annual tutoring curriculum for my students, a subject booklet summarising the topics to be covered in the year, brief notes specific to each topic, assessment tasks and hints and tips for preparing for examinations; preparation of my own notes for students in each topic, giving them individual assistance on any topics they are struggling with, helping them with assignments and other assessment tasks, giving them weekly revision tasks as homework and correcting them and also assisting students with exam preparation. I structure lessons by first preparing a curriculum by consulting with fellow tutors and teachers in my social circle, then interacting with students to find out where they are having difficulties and prepare notes and worksheets accordingly to address these issues and resolve them with practice.

Experience

I have been regularly tutoring VCE and IB chemistry, biology and economics to high school students and first and second year microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics-based subjects to university students (in both groups and individually) since April 2005. I have worked in a tutoring agency run by Mr. Arun Mehta in Glen Waverly as a chemistry tutor.

I have also been a volunteer tutor for Year 11 and 12 chemistry and biology students in the VCE Summer school in 2006 and 2007 organised by The University of Melbourne and was the subject coordinator for Biology in 2007. Apart from teaching I was also involved in preparation of a subject booklet summarising the topics to be covered in the year with brief notes specific to each topic, listing assessment tasks, and highlighting hints and tips for exam preparation.

I have learnt to approach teaching in an organised , systematic manner. I have trained myself to structure my classes / lessons by preparing a curriculum in consultation with fellow tutors and teachers. I prepare notes for students, give them individual assistance on topics they struggle with, help them with assignments and other assessment tasks, give them weekly revision tasks as homework, assist students with exam preparation, devise practice / preparatory exams.

These 4-5 years of tutoring experience has given me the capability to build a good rapport with secondary school students, bringing out the best in their educational experience and nurturing their brains to help them shape their future
